My little place on the internet...
This is my blog with personal and technical articles. My Blog for me is primarily a playground to do somethings with the server I have running via my DSL connection. And in my humble opinion it looks better every time I tinker with it.
Data protability
Will browsing along my regular sites today and RSS feeds I came across an article that was published on ReadWriteWeb titled
“ Bombshell: Google and Facebook Join DataPortability.org
Although I’m a somewhat regular reader of ReadWriteWeb and agree with them on allot of topics I’m afraid that I have to say that they’ are wrong this time. There is no bombshell, well at least not from the side of Google. Google has had plans for data portability way back in 2006 as you can read in this article dating from 11/07/2006 on the NetworkWorld.com site.
But I must admit that I’m very happy about this initiative. And the joining of the big players on the net to make data portability between the sites possible. Specially the joining of Google and FaceBook is very important because these two have the most user data on there sites and getting them aboard is key for success of this initiative.
I already have the habit of downloading on a regular basis my data on sites that I’ve subscribed to. For example I’m fetching my data from Plaxo and from del.icio.us every night via there respective APIs.
But I hope with this initiative it’ll be possible to get all my online data to and from any provider of my choosing. This will be a big leap forward for the web 2.0 services that are out there.
